Sasebo sailor charged with rape

SASEBO NAVAL BASE, Japan — A USS Harpers Ferry sailor was charged this month with the rape of a Navy spouse, Sasebo officials said Wednesday.

Seaman Christopher Gregory, 20, was referred to a general court-martial Sept. 15 for four specifications of sexual assault and rape, base spokesman Chuck Howard said.

The trial will be held at Yokosuka Naval Base, but no date had been set Wednesday, Howard said.

The Navy made the decision after an investigative hearing last month in Yokosuka, Lt. Denver Applehans, a spokesman for Navy Task Force 76, said in August.

Gregory was taken into custody in June after a daylong, citywide manhunt that included a mandatory muster for all base personnel.
