OCEANSIDE, Calif. — The Marine Corps has identified a sergeant found dead Monday at the Fallbrook, Calif., home he shared with his wife.

Sgt. Braulio V. Martinez, 28, a native of Hidalgo, Texas, was assigned to Camp Pendleton’s Headquarters and Support Battalion, base officials said Wednesday in a press release.

Martinez’s death remained under investigation by the San Diego County Sheriff’s Department. His wife was found in a bedroom suffering from head injuries in what authorities suspect was a domestic dispute. She remains hospitalized.

His body was found in the garage by two Marines who went to the home after the sergeant hadn’t shown up for work that morning, said Lt. Dennis Brugos, a sheriff’s spokesman. Detectives suspect that Martinez killed himself after thinking he had killed his wife, but they would not say how he died.

The couple’s young sons were found at the home of their childcare provider. Brugos said they were likely not at their parent’s home during the suspected fight.
