A new leader for nuclear weapons
A new leader for nuclear weapons

The Air Force was ripped for not having an assistant chief of staff in charge of nuclear weapons.

That changed Nov. 1 when Maj. Gen. C. Donald Alston took over as the first assistant chief of staff, strategic deterrence and nuclear integration.

Alston will have a direct line to both the Air Force secretary and chief of staff — not that he hasn’t since he returned from an Iraq deployment in September 2007 as the director of space and nuclear operations under the deputy chief of staff for Air, Space and Information Operations.

He started the job a month after a B-52 mistakenly flew six nuclear tipped cruise missiles from Minot Air Force Base, N.D., to Barksdale Air Force Base, La., in August 2007.

The Air Force has since been under fire for its nuclear problems, which got worse in March when it was revealed that four nuclear triggers were mistakenly shipped to Taiwan in 2006 and left there out of U.S. control for two years.
