Iowa man fined for impersonating Army reservist

MARION, Iowa — A Marion man accused of impersonating a U.S. Army Reserve officer during last summer’s floods has been fined $625.

Brandon Adams pleaded guilty last month to impersonating a public official.

According to police, Adams gave orders to Iowa National Guard soldiers on June 14 while wearing a military uniform with the patch of the 89th Regional Readiness Command.

Adams, while in uniform, was featured in a photograph by The Gazette helping a Cedar Rapids firefighter rescue a man from his flooded home on June 12.

Army Reserve spokeswoman Johanna Gonzalez says anyone can buy a military uniform and regiment patches from a surplus store. She says to ask for military identification if there’s any doubt about a soldier’s identity.
