Security experts: Cyberattacks will increaseBy William Matthews - Staff writer

Cyberattacks like those that accompanied the Russian invasion of Georgia in August are likely to accompany almost any traditional military action in the future, security experts warn in a report on cyber threats published by Georgia Tech University.
Even in the absence of overt military action, the U.S. is expected to be the target.
Cyberattacks will “play a more shadowy role in attempts by antagonist nations to subvert the U.S. economy and infrastructure,” the Georgia Tech Information Security Center warns in its “Emerging Cyber Threats Report for 2009.”
Meanwhile, a team of investigators probing cyberattacks on the Caucasus mountain country of Georgia concluded that “nationalistic hackers” in Russia carried out the attacks. Despite suspicion that the Russian government was involved in the attacks, the team reported that it has been unable to link the hackers’ activity directly to the Russian military or other government agencies.
However, the cyberinvestigators, working as Project Grey Goose, cited “historical evidence that past and present members of the Russian government endorse cyber warfare and/or cyber attacks initiated by their country’s hacker population.” Led by cyberanalyst Jeffrey Carr, the Grey Goose team said the Russian government has carefully distanced itself from the Russian hackers, “thus gaining deniability while passively supporting and enjoying the strategic benefits of their actions.”
