R.I. Guardsmen returning from Iraq

NORTH KINGSTOWN, R.I. — An Air National Guard unit is coming back to Rhode Island after spending six months in Iraq.

Members of the 143rd Civil Engineering Squadron are due to touch down at Quonset Air National Guard Base the afternoon of Nov. 4.

Lt. Col. Denis Riel, spokesman for the Rhode Island National guard, said the unit had been at Tallil Air Base, about 180 miles south of Baghdad, to maintain infrastructure and power and to work on construction projects at the American installation.

All but one of the 27 members in the unit that was deployed are returning. The remaining member stayed behind for medical reasons.
