Iraq: U.S. responds to security proposals

BAGHDAD — An Iraqi official says the U.S. has responded to Iraq’s proposals for changes in the draft security agreement that would keep U.S. troops in the country for another three years.

Government spokesman Ali al-Dabbagh says the response was received Thursday but gave no details and would not characterize the U.S. reply.

The Iraqi Cabinet asked the U.S. for changes in the pact Oct. 21. The proposals include Iraq’s demand for expanded Iraqi legal authority over U.S. soldiers, which the U.S. has described as a “red line.”

Iraq’s parliament must approve the deal before the U.N. mandate that governs U.S. operations in Iraq expires at year-end. But Shiite politicians say the pact is unlikely to win approval unless the U.S. accepts the amendments.
