A C-5B Galaxy made an emergency landing at Dover Air Force Base, Del., on Nov. 3 after flying through a flock of birds.
The jet was approaching Dover at about 7:45 p.m. when the transport struck several birds, an Air Force report said. The crew declared an emergency and landed safely at the Delaware base, where the plane was met by firefighters.
An inspection of the jet found bird strike damage to the No. 2 engine and the pylon attaching the engine to the left wing. The repair bill for the plane could surpass $1 million. The jet is assigned to Dover’s 436th Airlift Wing.
