A Marine stationed at Camp Lejeune, N.C., was charged Friday afternoon with the murder of his 2-year-old stepson, authorities said.

Lance Cpl. Iran Rashad Terrell, 22, was charged after autopsy results showed that his stepson, Jailyn McCoy, died as a result of blunt force trauma to the head, said Maj. Chris Hill of the Lenoir County Sheriff’s Office. McCoy was declared dead Wednesday at 2 years, 8 months old, after paramedics rushed his bruised body from his home in Kinston to the hospital, authorities said.

Hill said they initially charged Terrell on Wednesday with felonious child abuse after the Marine admitted “disciplining” the child.

“It was obvious that the child was suffering from some kind of abuse,” Hill said. “There were numerous bruises about the body of the child.”

Terrell is a motor vehicle operator with Combat Logistics Regiment 27, 2nd Marine Logistics Group, Marine officials at Lejeune said. He deployed once to Iraq during 2007.
