Expanded bonuses boon for Army pilots

Chief Warrant Officer 4 James Snyder (back seat), an AH-64D Apache attack helicopter pilot for 1st Attack Battalion, 227th Aviation Regiment, 1st Air Cavalry Brigade, 1st Cavalry Division, taxis his aircraft back to his parking spot at Fort Hood, Texas. The Army is offering retention bonuses of up to 25,000 a year to select warrant officer pilots.

The most expansive menu yet of aviation retention bonuses, ranging from $12,000 to $25,000 annually, is being offered to the Army’s most experienced warrant officer pilots.

The Aviation Continuation Pay program was renewed for fiscal 2009 in early October, and will remain in effect until Sept. 30.

Officers who want to extend their service under terms of the ACP program must do so by that date to qualify for an annual bonus.

The incentive program is reviewed by the Defense Department annually, and there is no guarantee that ACP will be renewed for fiscal 2010, according to Army officials.

Budget estimates submitted to Congress earlier this year indicate the Army plans to spend $26.5 million on ACP in 2009.
