Re-up window closing soon for some MOSs
Re-up window closing soon for some MOSs

For the first time in three years, the Corps will put its Quality Reenlistment Program in place in December, which means time is running out for some first-term Marines to re-enlist, officials said.

The Corps issued a warning in Marine administrative message 596/08, saying empty slots, or “boat spaces,” in some military occupational specialties could soon run out. In those MOSs, QRP will reduce re-enlistment eligibility to noncommissioned officers deemed “exceptional,” meaning some Marines may lose out on the big-time re-enlistment bonuses offered if they don’t act soon.

“Marines who delay submitting re-enlistment requests should be aware of the risk of losing a re-enlistment opportunity in their primary MOS,” officials said.

Overall, the Corps has set aside $469.5 million through its Selective Reenlistment Bonus program for fiscal 2009, with Marines in some specialties receiving up to $90,000 to re-up.

The use of QRP is one more sign that the Corps is closing in on its goal of growing the service to 202,000 active-duty Marines. It was not used during the last two years because the Corps made growing the service a top priority, even if some specialties became overpopulated, officials said.
