(Air Force Times) Backtalk: Changes to nuclear program lack substance
Changes to nuclear program lack substance
By Robert F. Dorr

Air Force Secretary Michael Donley and Chief of Staff Gen. Norton Schwartz came into office with a powerful mandate to change the way the Air Force handles nuclear weapons.

They could have sought to de-alert our missile force and reduce our bloated nuclear arsenal.

Instead, their plan for a new Global Strike Command, to handle what they call “the nuclear enterprise,” is a change with little substance or imagination.

The level of leadership chosen for the all-nuclear command, and even its name, are lackluster decisions at best. At worst, they suggest an absence of vision and direction.

A Pentagon advisory group issued 34 recommendations Sept. 12, including one to consolidate nuclear responsibilities under the existing Air Force Space Command, which then would be renamed Air Force Strategic Command.
