North Dakota Guard unit to go to Afghanistan

BISMARCK, N.D. — North Dakota National Guard officials say an air defense artillery unit will be sent to Afghanistan.

The Guard says about 40 soldiers from First Battalion, 188th Air Defense Artillery are expected to mobilize early next year.

The Guard says more than 70 other soldiers from the unit have been put on alert for possible duty.

The unit, which is based in Grand Forks, Bismarck and Fargo, has about 300 soldiers.

Parts of the unit have mobilized earlier, most recently in Afghanistan. Thirty-nine soldiers returned in January after a year of security duty there.
