CAMDEN, N.J. — An FBI informant who infiltrated a group of Muslim immigrants charged with planning to attack the Army’s Fort Dix was frustrated with the lack of cooperation from his chief contact in the group.
In transcripts of secretly recorded conversations presented in court Thursday, informant Mahmoud Omar expresses frustration that suspect Mohamad Shnewer didn’t follow through on his promises to organize the five men.
Defense attorneys say it was Omar, not the men, who instigated the attack plan so he could continue collecting money and free rent from the FBI.
The attack was never carried out, but the defendants, all foreign-born men in their 20s, face charges of attempted murder and conspiracy to kill military personnel, along with weapons offenses.
