JACKSON, N.J. — Some Jackson Township residents are complaining about the noise produced by military training flights at Lakehurst Naval Air Engineering Station.

The noise started after a $14 million assault training zone runway was finished in May.

The residents say their homes are shaking as pilots of Air Force C-17 cargo planes and Marine Corps helicopters practice low-level takeoffs and landings into the night.

Military officials say the training will prepare pilots for operations in Iraq and Afghanistan and save lives.

Col. Scott Hill at McGuire Air Force Base says the planes are now flying at 1,500 feet instead of 1,000 feet. The runway also shuts down at midnight.
