ASHWAUBENON, Wis. — More than 300 people gathered Saturday to welcome 150 soldiers from the 432nd Civil Affairs Battalion home from Iraq.

As the plane taxied and parked at the terminal around 1 p.m., friends and family members strained against the barricade. Some held signs of “Welcome home,” pictures of soldiers and of the word “Dismissed.”

Unit commander Lt. Col. Rich Appel said the unit’s 150 soldiers performed well during the deployment, which began in February.

“They were an integral part of working with the locals — the organizations and the businesses — in getting the infrastructure rebuilt.

“Without that, the Iraqis can’t handle their own business and the day-to-day affairs.”
