Judge tells lawyers in Dix case to move along

CAMDEN, N.J. — As defense lawyers keep lobbing questions at a key FBI informant in the trial of five men accused of planning to kill soldiers on New Jersey’s Fort Dix, the judge is getting impatient.

On Tuesday, Michael Huff, the lawyer for defendant Dritan Duka, continued grilling Mahmoud Omar, who is being paid $1,500 per week for helping the government, about his role in the case.

At one point, he asked a series of questions about Omar’s opinion of Duka and his two brothers — also defendants in the case.

“I did business with them,” said Omar, who made hundreds of hours of secret recordings in the case. “They are very nice people.”

A few minutes later, the jury was dismissed for lunch. With the jurors out of earshot, U.S. District Judge Robert Kugler offered his opinion: “I fail to see any relevance to his personal opinion on the issue,” he said.
