Reserve MP unit activated for Iraq

WAHPETON, N.D. — About 20 members of a Wahpeton Reserve Marine unit are preparing for duty in Iraq next year, including four who just returned from there.

The unit is part of the Detachment Military Police Company, Headquarters Battalion, 4th Marine Division. The Marines say it’s the unit’s second deployment, and four of its members have volunteered just a month after they returned from duty in Iraq.

1st Lt. Eric Kaltrider said the others who returned are not being deployed with the latest group.

“Throughout the year, we have brand new reservists that are joining the unit,” he said. “If you’ve got Marines already deployed, we’re not going to be counting on them for the new deployment.”

The Wahpeton unit will join members from the Minneapolis area and Rochester, N.Y. in reporting for duty at the end of the year. The Marines expect to be in Iraq next spring, and to be activated for about a year.
