Lawyers in Dix trial: Client is not believable

CAMDEN, N.J. — Defense lawyers in the trial of five men accused of planning to attack soldiers on Fort Dix have painstakingly questioned the credibility of Mahmoud Omar, the government informant who is the prosecution’s key witness.

In a twist, though, they have been trying to persuade jurors that one of their own clients also is not believable — and they have tried to get Omar to back them up.

He has — but only to a degree.

Omar was on the witness stand Wednesday for his 12th day of testimony — and his eighth under cross-examination by defense lawyers. He was to be back Thursday as prosecutors continue their redirect examination of him.

Recordings and transcripts entered into evidence in the case show that Mohamad Shnewer, a 23-year-old cab driver, had a lot of ideas about how to attack America.
