Marine Corps Forces Africa to support AfriCom

Marine Corps Forces Africa, the service’s newest command, stood up this week and will support the recently established U.S. Africa Command.

It will be located alongside Marine Corps Forces Europe at Panzer Kaserne in Boeblingen, Germany.

Brig. Gen. Tracy L. Garrett will now command both Marine Corps Forces Europe and the Corps’ new Africa command. Garrett participated in an unfurling of the colors ceremony Nov. 14 ahead of the activation.

The command will manage Marine Corps activities in all of Africa except Egypt, which remains under U.S. Central Command authority. Previously, Africa fell under Central, Pacific and Europe commands.

There are approximately 50 Marines and civilians in the new command, which will receive administrative and logistical support from Marine Corps Forces Europe, according to Master Sgt. Grady Fontana, Marine Corps Forces Europe spokesman.
