Marine accused of desertion posts $5,000 bail

PORT ANGELES, Wash. — A Colorado Marine arrested in Washington state on desertion and contempt of court charges has posted $5,000 bail.

A judge has said he expects the Marines to take 23-year-old Lance Hering into custody when he was released. It wasn’t immediately clear when that might happen.

Port Angeles attorney Karen Unger said Hering’s bail was posted Thursday.

Hering was reported missing in August 2006. A friend said Hering had wandered off after he was injured in a rock-climbing accident near Boulder, Colo.

After a massive search, authorities concluded the report was a hoax.
