SAN DIEGO — Quartermaster 1st Class (SW) Miguel Rosinski tried to focus as he plotted course from the bridge of his cruiser on its final leg home.
As Chancellorsville plied its way Tuesday through the bay, passing the aircraft carrier Ronald Reagan that had just moored at its home berth, Rosinski’s thoughts were of his wife and newborn son and the butterflies in his stomach.
It didn’t take long for Rosinski, 28, to rush his way to the brow with red roses in hand as one of a handful of “new dads,” a coveted category among the first to exit the ship and reunite with their loved ones waiting on the pier.
His wife, Michelle, held their infant son, as the sailor rushed to envelop them in a tight embrace and warm kiss. He took Kanoa, 4½ months old, into his arms. The baby was crying, but Rosinski didn’t care. It was his first time seeing his son, for real. “It’s OK,” he whispered to the infant.
The deployment was the fourth for Rosinski, but the first for his wife. “I’m so excited,” she said, glancing at her husband. “I’ve never felt so nervous. It was like butterflies,” he added.
