DICKINSON, N.D. — Some North Dakota National Guard soldiers are overseas this Thanksgiving. But some who spent last Thanksgiving in Iraq are enjoying the holiday at home this year.

Members of the Jamestown-based 817th Engineer Company arrived home in June after spending nearly a year in Iraq scouting supply roads for bombs and other obstacles. The soldiers were from more than 40 communities across North Dakota.

Jonathan Jurgens of Dickinson says the military makes a big effort to make the troops feel at home, especially on holidays. But he says it’s nice to be home this year, have a home-cooked meal and spend time with friends and family.

His parents Ken and Peggy say having their son back home unharmed is definitely something to be thankful for.
