2nd ex-Ranger sentenced for bank robbery

TACOMA, Wash. — The second of five men convicted of the Aug. 7, 2006, robbery of a Bank of America branch in Tacoma has been sentenced to 11 years in prison.

Twenty-two-year-old Chad Palmer, of Norfolk, Va., was sentenced Tuesday in U.S. District Court in Tacoma by judge Franklin D. Burgess for armed bank robbery and brandishing a machine gun. Palmer pleaded guilty Dec. 7, 2006.

Palmer and two other defendants were members of an Army Ranger unit based at Fort Lewis. Two additional defendants are Canadians who traveled to Tacoma for the robbery.

Twenty-two-year-old Luke Sommer, of Peachland, British Columbia, also a former Army Ranger, was sentenced last week to 24 years in prison. The remaining three defendants are scheduled to be sentenced in early 2009.
