HAYDEN, Idaho — Military recruiters in northern Idaho say the tough economy is making it easier to find people to sign up.

Sgt. 1st Class Joseph Mason, station commander for the Army’s recruiting station in Hayden, says his goal for the first three months of 2009 is 22 recruits, and that he’s already signed 17.

He says military recruiters can now reject some potential recruits who might have been considered in previous years, such as those with minor criminal records or without a high school diploma.

Pvt. Jacob Gray just returned to northern Idaho from three months of boot camp with the Marine Corps in San Diego, Calif.

The 19-year-old says he had been working a dead-end job and joined to learn skills that will be of value if he decides to return to the civilian work force.
