Alaskan senators back missile defense plan

FAIRBANKS, Alaska — Alaska Sens. Lisa Murkowski and Mark Begich said they are concerned about any critical look the country’s missile defense system receives.

They responded to remarks from Sen. Carl Levin, a Michigan Democrat who serves as chairman of the Armed Services Committee.

Levin told reporters that federal lawmakers will focus on the existing missile defense program early this year.

He notes the program “has problems” and needs to be put up against a more rigorous testing program that mimics real-world scenarios.

Murkowski and Begich spoke Monday, one day before reports emerged noting that North Korea is preparing to test a missile capable of reaching Alaska.
