Hornets bump wings; no injuries reported

Navy officials are investigating a mid-air collision Monday of two F/A-18A Hornets over the Persian Gulf, a Navy spokesman said.

No injuries were reported, and the two aircraft landed safely on the carrier Theodore Roosevelt after their wingtips made contact, Navy spokesman Lt. Sean Robertson said.

The two pilots from Strike Fighter Squadron 87 were placed on flight restriction pending a review by a Field Naval Aviator Examination Board, Robertson said.

The cause of the accident and the extent of the damage remain under investigation.

The collision occurred over the water near the carrier, Robertson said.
