Jan. recruiting goal of 2,600 new airmen met

The Air Force met its recruiting goal for January by bringing in 2,600 airmen for the month, according to the Air Force Recruiting Service’s monthly report.

The service has met its goal each month for fiscal 2009, which began Oct. 1. The total number of new airmen so far is 11,827. The year’s goal is 31,980.

Seventy-eight percent are men and 22 percent are women. Their average age is 20.

Whites make up 74.5 percent and 18.8 percent are African-American. Blacks who are 18 to 24 make up 11.4 percent of the U.S. population, according to the Census Bureau.

Nearly 7 percent identified themselves belonging to a race other than black or white. The percentage of Hispanics is not included because Hispanic is considered an ethnicity and not a race.
