Fort Bliss soldier dies in southern NM crash

ANTHONY, N.M. — A soldier has died after his vehicle slammed into the back of tractor-trailer in Dona Ana County. Investigators said alcohol is considered a factor in the collision.

Hector Martinez, 19, who is stationed at Fort Bliss, Texas, was traveling on New Mexico 213 near Anthony about 1 a.m. Sunday when he ran into the trailer, state police Lt. Eric F. Garcia said.

There was no indication that Martinez tried to brake before the crash, Garcia said, and witnesses reported seeing Martinez traveling at a high rate of speed before the collision. Martinez was pronounced dead at the scene.

The truck driver wasn’t injured.
