An Air Force special operations MQ-1 Predator crashed Sunday in Afghanistan because of engine problems, according to Air Force reports.

The plane, assigned to the 3rd Special Operations Squadron at Cannon Air Force Base, N.M., was lost over southern Afghanistan about 11:35 a.m. local time.

It is not clear what caused the engine malfunction. Air Force boards will investigate the mishap.

Past Predator crashes involving engine failures have been blamed on a wide-range of problems, from a cracked oil line to a malfunctioning electrical system.
