Pacific briefs: Airman involved in head-on collision

KITANAKAGUSUKU, Okinawa — A 27-year-old airman was involved in a head-on collision at about 2:10 a.m. on Sunday while allegedly driving under the influence of alcohol on Highway 22, according to Okinawa police.

The Kadena Air Base sergeant — whose name police did not release because they are not holding him — was not injured, police said. The 20-year-old Japanese driver of the other vehicle was treated for a sprained neck, police said.

The sergeant was driving near the Awase Meadows Golf Course’s clubhouse toward the intersection of Highway 330 when he swerved into the opposite lane and hit an oncoming car, police said.

A breathalyzer test detected 0.53 milligrams of alcohol in his breath, exceeding the legal limit of 0.15 milligrams, according to a police report.
