Obama Not Hot on Bush Era Truth Panel
Obama Not Hot on Bush Era Truth Panel
February 10, 2009
Associated Press

WASHINGTON - The chairman of the Senate Judiciary Committee's proposal to launch a "truth commission" to investigate the Bush administration's anti-terror programs and other matters got a lukewarm response from President Barack Obama, who said he would rather "get it right moving forward."

Sen. Patrick Leahy, a Vermont Democrat, said the primary goal of the commission would be to learn the truth rather than prosecute former officials, but said the inquiry should reach far beyond looking for misdeeds at the Justice Department under Bush to include matters of Iraq prewar intelligence and the Defense Department.

Leahy outlined his suggestion for a "truth and reconciliation" commission during a speech at Georgetown University Monday.

"I'm doing this not to humiliate people or punish people but to get the truth out," he said.

The president, during a Monday evening news conference, sounded cool to the idea.

2. Not something he should push
Congress is supposed to investigate and write new laws to take care of abuses of the system. An independent Justice Department can investigate individuals as well as state Attorneys General. The best way is not for Obama to get out in front and cheerlead for investigations, but to stand in the back and not obstruct investigations. Kind of like he did with the whole Blagojevich thing.

3. Not punishing the bush cartel . . .
. . . just means that someone, somewhere in the future, will see that they can get away with whatever they want to do with no fear of recourse. Criminals need to be put behind bars.
