Good Conduct Medal makes a comeback

The Good Conduct Medal is returning to the Air Force after a three-year hiatus, Air Force officials announced Wednesday.

The medal, awarded to enlisted airmen for three consecutive years of “exemplary conduct” with no disciplinary problems, was discontinued by then-Chief of Staff Gen. T. Michael Moseley in February 2006.

The move to discontinue the medal was well intended, the Air Force’s senior enlisted airman said, but turned out to be a mistake that angered the enlisted corps.

“Doing this was seen as taking something away from our airmen,” said Chief Master Sgt. of the Air Force Rodney McKinley.

The decision to reinstate the medal was signed by Air Force Secretary Michael Donley in November and takes effect Wednesday.
