Ind. Guard unit heading to Afghanistan

LAPORTE, Ind. — About 170 members of a National Guard unit based in northern Indiana are being activated for a deployment to Afghanistan.

Indiana Guard officials announced Friday that the LaPorte-based 1613th Engineer Company would be activated in March. The unit’s duties are expected to include working on facility support projects while overseas.

The unit’s deployment time is expected to be no longer than one year.
