Navy asks Wash. to maintain ferry service

BANGOR, Wash. — The Navy is asking the Washington state ferry system to maintain service for sailors, civilian employees and their families.

The Northwest Region commander, Adm. James Symonds, wrote ferries Director David Mosely this week to say that ferries are needed for travel to bases on and around Puget Sound.

The Kitsap Sun reports a tight state budget may force the ferry system to reduce the number of boats it operates.

Rep. Norm Dicks, D-Wash., says Washington should accommodate the military to support national defense and to preserve jobs. He says the Navy has 23,000 military personnel, 16,600 civilian employees and more than 10,000 contract workers in the Puget Sound area.
