FAYETTEVILLE, N.C. — Police say they have stopped investigating the disappearance of a soldier after learning that he had been in contact with family and friends and is likely in Arkansas.

Police said in a news release Friday night that the case of Spc. Joseph E. Putnam, 22, had been turned over to the military and Arkansas authorities.

Phone messages left with police Saturday were not immediately returned.

Putnam is a member of the 4th Brigade Combat Team, 82nd Airborne Division, at Fort Bragg.

Reports initially said he was last seen Tuesday at a convenience store and police used dogs Thursday morning to search the woods behind the store.
