LOUISVILLE, Ky. — About 180 Kentucky National Guard soldiers who spent the past year in Iraq were greeted by their families and friends during a homecoming ceremony in Louisville.

The Courier-Journal of Louisville says the reunion took place Sunday at the Kentucky Air National Guard base. For some members of the 223rd Military Police Company, it was their second stint in Iraq since the war began in 2003.

Lt. Gov. Dan Mongiardo and Kentucky Adjutant General Edward W. Tonini were among those greeting the returning soldiers. Tonini said that by training Iraqi police forces in the past year, the Kentucky soldiers gave them a chance to lead a free society.
