The Air Force Reserve has enacted new guidelines for how the service promotes airmen to colonel.

Reserve colonel candidates in 2008 were required to be in their current grade for at least three and a half years before being considered for promotion, according to a news release from the Air Force Reserve Personnel Center in Denver.

Next year, candidates will be required to have four years as lieutenant colonels.

The change stems from a 2007 promotion policy that sought to reduce the number of colonels in the service, according to briefing documents for the Air Reserve.

“The decision to phase this change in over two years ensured promotion opportunity for 2008, but also reduced the population of officers meeting the board for the first time to less than half,” the release reads.

1. Why not just have a limit on number of officers that can be promoted.
And promotions can only be granted 2 to 4 times a year based on available slots with the most qualified applicants.

2. There already is a limit and the board meets only once/year.

3. Then it would appear they don't need to require 3 1/2 instead of 3 years eligibility.
Just approve the best from the pool of eligible candidates.
