Schwartz: Maxwell Internet was vulnerable
Schwartz: Maxwell Internet was vulnerable

Air Force leaders cut off Internet access at Maxwell Air Force Base, Ala., last year after Chief of Staff Gen. Norton Schwartz said base officials didn’t “manage their network in a way that didn’t make everyone else vulnerable.”

Schwartz described it as a “significant event” after he was asked by reporters at a breakfast Tuesday if the “Maxwell case” was a major intrusion. Air Force officials so far haven’t provide further details on the incident.

Maxwell has since improved its cyber security and is back on the Internet, Schwartz said.

“This was the real deal,” he said. “We have standards and we will collectively enforce those standards or we won't be on the net.”

However, Maj. Gen. William T. Lord, commander of Air Force Cyber Command (Provisional), said taking Maxwell off the Internet was not out of the ordinary.
