NY Guard warns of online con artist
NY Guard warns of online con artist
Staff report

The New York National Guard is warning the public about an Internet con artist who is misrepresenting himself or herself as a member of the Guard to take advantage of car buyers shopping online.

A poster on online classified advertising sites, including the popular Craigslist.com, claims to be Sgt. Jennifer Malone of the Guard’s A Company, 427th Brigade Support Battalion, in Rochester, N.Y. When contacted, the poster tells interested buyers that she is deploying to Iraq and needs to sell her Chevy Suburban right away, pressuring the potential buyers into making a decision.

In another variation of the same scam, the seller claims to be Sgt. Mike Henson of the 27th Brigade Combat Team, who is deploying to Afghanistan and needs to sell an Acura Infiniti for $5,000.

The poster, in both cases, then promises to deliver and truck or car with the registration, in exchange for money sent through eBay.

There is no Sgt. Jennifer Malone or Sgt. Mike Henson in the New York Guard, and the 427th and the 27th are not deploying.
