FORT BRAGG, N.C. — An interpreter for a Special Forces team in Afghanistan testified at a Green Beret’s court-martial Friday that he saw the team leader shoot an Afghan man who made no sudden gestures and had his hands in his pockets.

The interpreter, an Afghan known as “Mark” to the soldiers he worked with, said Master Sgt. Joseph D. Newell repeatedly shook his head and looked at the sky as he questioned the man before shooting him last March in southern Afghanistan, according to The Fayetteville Observer.

“When I saw his eyes, I got scared,” the interpreter testified during the court-martial for Newell, who is charged with murder in the man’s death.

Prosecutors accuse Newell, 38, of Tecumseh, Mich., of premeditated murder for shooting a man they claim posed no threat.

Newell could receive life in prison if convicted.
