Bribe sentencing delayed for ex-airman

DENVER — A federal judge says he needs more information about the mental health of a former Air Force soldier before he sentences him for taking bribes from inmates during his job as a guard.

Judge John Kane says he delayed the sentencing of 24-year-old John K. Brownfield after learning that he may be suffering from mental and emotional disorders.

Brownfield told The Pueblo Chieftain he served two tours of duty in Iraq and Afghanistan, and his attorney says part of his job included “cleaning up bodies and cleaning up body parts.”

Brownfield will undergo a psychiatric evaluation before he is sentenced. He has admitted to taking at least $3,000 in bribes to give inmates contraband tobacco at a Florence prison, where he began working on February 2007.
