DRUM INLET, N.C. — U.S military crews are searching for an Army soldier who apparently went overboard about 15 miles off the North Carolina coast.

The unidentified soldier was reported missing Sunday morning, according to a U.S. Coast Guard press release. Rescuers from the U.S. Marine Corps were helping in the search.

The soldier was last seen Sunday on the bridge of the Major General Winfield Scott, which is based at Fort Eustis, Va.

The Daily Advance of Elizabeth City reported the missing soldier was 58 years old and was not believed to be wearing a life vest or anti-exposure suit to protect him from the elements at sea. The ocean water temperature was about 58 degrees on Sunday. The man’s name has not been released.
