EOD support unit commander fired

SAN DIEGO — The commander of a San Diego-based support unit for explosive ordnance disposal forces was removed from command Tuesday, Navy officials announced Wednesday.

Lt. Cmdr. Kelly Williams, who has commanded Explosive Ordnance Disposal Expeditionary Support Unit 7 since November 2007, was relieved of duty by Capt. Ted Lucas, said Lt. Kate Raia, a spokeswoman for the San Diego-based EOD Group 1.

Lucas, who commands Explosive Ordnance Disposal Group 1, fired the officer because of “the loss of confidence in Williams’ ability to command,” Raia said in a statement. No specific reason was given.

Williams has been temporarily reassigned to EOD Group 1. Cmdr. Gene Rathgeber has been assigned to temporarily take command of ESU-7.
