My neighbor, a young 26 yr old farmer has a wife and 2 children. He enlisted in the Marines, served his full term of service. Came home to the family farm. He works 1400+ acres. The Marines have contacted him, recalling him for a term of 12 months. His wife is not able to run the farm alone. Is there anything that can be done to help this family out of this desperate situation?
I must let you know that I have known this young man since he was born. My son is his age and they have been best friends all their lives. Ryan(the Marine) always wanted to farm his family's land. He worked along side his father when he was young. After high school graduation and marriage, he enlisted in the Marines.
Are there any groups they can contact for help in appealing his return to active duty? Any help would be appreciated.

We need some more info if we are to help. Does he own the land himself? What crops does he produce?

2. Best to get him out of recall through a hardship claim. |

It would take an incredible amount of time and skilled labor to replace his work on his farm for a year. But the thing is, he may well be killed or crippled during that 12 months, and then what happens to his wife, his kids and his family farm? At best, he'll come back with post-traumatic stress syndrome and have had significant exposure to depleted uranium. Most soldiers are coming back with 10/15% hearing loss or worse. And there's a significant chance of brain damamge, lost limbs, etc. from direct attacks.
Maybe if he's in a blue state, his Senators can help him. If not keep him from being reactivated, at least keep him out of Iraq/Afghanistan - get him stationed somewhere safer for that 12 months.
As to the farm, there are farmers who will lease farmland. My Mom inherited part of a family farm, and a neighboring farmer actually farmed it for her for many years. They split the costs of seed and fertilizer, and they split the profit at the end of the year. She paid all taxes. However, her farm was only 200 acres. 1400 is a big spread.
