Not this DU, of course, but depleted uranium.
I know what it is, and I know what it does. I researched it years ago when the papers started reporting on the "mystery illness" killing GW vets. It didn't seem like much of a mystery to me.
But now I know somebody who's got it. Marine, 16 months in Kuwait, bone cancer; prognosis is now 3 to 6 months. Doctors say, "Do NOT mention 'Gulf War Syndrome' again." But any idiot who's read word one on the subject would know this was no fluke.
What I want to know is what organization, if any, is the one making the most noise about DU?
I know where to go if I want to donate my energy to working for stem-cell research, or gay rights, or the elderly. But I don't know where I can offer my services for this. I can Google until I'm blind, but I'm not finding any strong voice for DU victims.
Yeah, I've written about DU, educated people on a subject I knew nothing about until a few years ago... but, yeah, it's a lot different when it stops being an abstract, and there's a face you know on it. And I'll be damned if one more vet who served honorably, and who would be in Iraq tomorrow if called back, is going to die forgotten because of this.
So, where do I go? Who do I contact? I have no money, so I don't know what I can actually do. But I want to find out.
Any ideas?
