Gay former Marine in Showtime documentary
By Michael Hoffman - Staff writer
Posted : Monday Jun 25, 2007 18:16:22 EDT

An openly gay, 34-year-old man shocked his friends and family seven years ago by joining the Marine Corps Reserve, where he at first concealed his sexual orientation from his comrades.

Showtime will air “Semper Fi: One Marine’s Journey,” a documentary chronicling his struggle to serve, on Monday at 8:30 p.m. Eastern time (check local listings for other showings).

Jeff Key served in the Marine Corps Reserve from 2000 to 2004, deploying to Iraq in 2003 with the 4th Light Armored Reconnaissance Battalion for two months before being medically evacuated after suffering a radial hernia.

But once he returned to the States, Key said he couldn’t continue the lie anymore. He said he was frustrated with both the “don’t ask, don’t tell” policy and what he called the mismanagement of the Iraq war. Key is a member of the protest group, Iraq Veterans Against the War. ~snip~
