Former Marine in custody following standoff

LOXLEY, Ala. — A man described as a former Marine sniper faces attempted murder charges after he was accused of shooting at two police officers in Loxley and holding dozens of other officers at bay in a wooded area, authorities said.

Baldwin County Sheriff Huey “Hoss” Mack Jr. said Edward Eugene Lichty, 41, is accused of firing on the officers with a rifle when they responded to a call Sunday morning at his home on Loxley Woods Lane.

Baldwin County District Judge Jody Bishop on Monday set Lichty’s bail at $1 million, or $500,000 for each of two charges of attempted murder. Lichty is being held in the Baldwin County Corrections Center in Bay Minette.

The sheriff said Lichty, dressed in camouflage when found in nearby woods, was taken to South Baldwin Regional Medical Center at Foley to be checked for dehydration and drug use.

No one was hurt in the shooting and four-hour standoff, the sheriff told the Press-Register.
