Reserve EOD community forming
Reserve EOD community forming

The Navy will stand up an explosive ordnance disposal rating next month for the relatively small number of reservists — fewer than 100 — who are trained in the field.

The rating will initially be manned by reservists from different Navy Reserve communities who hold NECs 5332 through 5337, but Master Chief Petty Officer Don Siegel, an enlisted community manager technical adviser at Navy Personnel Command in Millington, Tenn., said there are not enough trained reservists to fill those slots.

So Navy Reserve officials will try to lure active-duty EOD sailors into the Navy Reserve and ask reservists who don’t have the EOD naval enlisted classifications to enter the EOD training pipeline, Siegel said. Training takes about 39 months to complete, he said.

“We are building a session plan to populate the reserve component,” Siegel said.

Part of that plan includes bonuses, said Lt. Ken White, the selected reserve enlisted community manager. But White declined to say how much that bonus would be or who would be eligible for it.

Reserve EODs will deploy as mobile companies or platoons manned entirely by reservists, Siegel said.
