4,700 sew on sergeant, staff sergeant stripes
Staff report
Posted : Monday Sep 17, 2007 17:45:44 EDT

October cutoff scores issued by the Human Resources Command on Monday authorize nearly 4,700 active component promotions to sergeant and staff sergeant.

The 3,004 sergeant and 1,656 staff sergeant promotions represent the best month for stripes since January, when 3,400 soldiers advanced to sergeant.

The promotable soldiers will come from a pool of 17,217 eligible corporals and specialists, and 16,546 sergeants.

Information provided to the Human Resources Command by field units indicates the soldiers are eligible for promotion to sergeant and staff sergeant on Oct. 1. To confirm promotion eligibility, soldiers should contact their unit S-2section, personnel services battalion or military personnel division.

uhc comment: I understand the need to have a strong NCO corps, but this sure strikes me a shades of Viet Nam.

2. IIRC, about '69 or '70 the army was promoting *lots* of people
to E-5 & E-6. Some deserved, some not. I think it was specifically intended to keep folks in the military.

3. I made E-5 (Spec-5) in '69 ... after about 15 months in service.

They had absolutely no illusion about "keep(ing this) folks in the military." No way.

I wasn't given PFC out of basic - the cadre gave the solely to the combat arms types. I made E-4 (Spec-4) despite being 'disqualified' for a GCM.

I was looking for current Fragging data for further discussion when I came across this "terminology" Shake and Bake Sgts''''

EXCERPT:
""I was there and the best description of the last years of the US Army in Vietnam was Mute Mutiny. The only goal was to get high and survive. There weren’t any Lifers left except the First Sergeants, Colonels and Generals punching their tickets. Shake and Bake Sergeants and Officers were trying to survive, too. There were crazy Swift Boat types around but they were weeded out of the Army in the field by 1969-1970.""
